I have a gift for you for Mother’s Day!

But first, a little history lesson.

Mother’s Day was not created by the greeting card companies, but by a revolutionary warrior for peace. Julia Ward Howe — abolitionist, activist and poet — was the founder of the original Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870.

Tired of war, Julia’s pain became her mission. She called for a revolution.

She called the day of the revolution: Mother’s Day.

Women need no longer be made a party to proceedings which fill the globe with grief and horror. That word should now be heard, and answered to as never before!

Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts! Whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Let us meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let us then solemnly take council with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace…!

~ Julia Ward Howe and her original Mother’s Day Proclamation, written in 1870

Isn’t that exactly what we’re doing as homeschooling Mamas?

“Let us take council with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace.”

We are contributing enormously to making the world a better place by our actions every day.

  1. Hi Jean

LOVE this ! You are so right & I totally agree that homeschooling our children is VERY important work – we are raising the future one day at a time. Thanks for such a timely gift.
Happy Mother’s Day to you, too ! Elizabeth –

    1. Yes! And I think when we take this to heart, things can shift in our homeschooling. Happy Mother’s Day to you, Elizabeth.

  2. I love your manifesto. If I had trusted more in the early years I would have appreciated the blips more. And now I look back and see the journey was just right for them. Thank you x

    1. Thanks so much, Dawn! I agree, I too wish I had trusted more in the early years. That I could have been a bit more relaxed about it all! And been able to focus more on all that we were doing rather than what we weren’t! There is a luxury in looking back. And I’m so grateful for this homeschooling journey.

  3. Jean, thank you so much!
It was very interesting to read about the history of Mother’s day.
And very inspiring to read the Manifesto! And it is so true that we need to speak our minds and tell what we want 🙂
    Blessings!
