Episode 8
The unique way a homeschooling lesson unfolds is a magical combination of you, the homeschooling parent, and your child. Along with the material you’re teaching, the environment on any given day, the season, and so many, many other things! Homeschooling is really more of an art than science.
As homeschooling parents, we seem to seek just the right formula for homeschooling success.
However, teaching and learning are often times unpredictable. Rarely systematic or formulaic. Homeschooling, I would argue, is not an objective science.
Homeschooling is an art! And I believe this so firmly that I renamed my mentoring business the ART of Homeschooling.
The Art of Homeschooling is about creating and crafting your lessons with love and connection in the forefront of your mind.
I hope you’ll embrace the ideas I share about homeschooling as a science, an art, and a craft, here in episode 8 of the podcast.
Homeschooling is an ART: Three Tips
- Embrace the Art and Craft of Teaching
- See Challenges as Opportunities
- Find a Community of Practitioners, colleagues who will support you on your homeschooling journey.
Quotes on Teaching
This juicy quote is from the wonderful movie “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” by Focus Films, about Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood:
“Love is at the root of everything – all learning, all parenting, all relationships – love or the lack of it.”
Likewise, Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, wrote,
“…you will be a good educator if you endeavor to surround every individual pupil with sympathy, with real sympathy (with love).”
And Parker Palmer, author of The Courage to Teach, wrote,
“Teaching, like any truly human activity, emerges from one’s inwardness, for better or worse. As I teach, I project the condition of my soul onto my students, my subject, and our way of being together.”
